William A. Longacre
William A. Longacre II was born in Michigan, in 1937. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1963.  He has held positions at many universities, including Yale and the University of Arizona.  He is best known for his part in developing the idea of ceramic sociology, and applying this method to his work in the Southwest and with the Kalinga in the Philippines.  He was behind the method of analyzing pottery and pottery production in order to understand kinship and residence patterns.  Longacre felt that you could use the spatial distribution of potsherd decorative styles to understand kinship.
